Family Reunion, St. Louis, MO
Historical Overview of the Barefield-Barfield, Clay, Claypool, Henderson, McClelland, and Woolfolk Family Reunion
The Barefield Family Reunion began in August 1981 in Madison, Illinois, sparked by a heartfelt desire to reconnect generations of family members who had become distant over time. This initiative was led by Elder Finas Dave Barefield, Sr., and his brother Archie Arkall, sons of Dave Barefield. Their visit to Aunt Pearlie (McClelland) Barefield highlighted the disconnect among younger relatives, prompting a call to action.
Morris Barefield took on the responsibility of compiling family contacts and communication, while the children of William and Pearlie Barefield organized accommodations and program logistics. With a modest fee of $10 per person ($30 per family), the inaugural reunion featured home-cooked meals and a joyful weekend of connection, reflection, and celebration, culminating in a Sunday worship service.
The event was so successful it laid the foundation for a cherished biennial tradition.
As the reunion grew, so did its geographic reach and organizational complexity. From California to Florida, family branches took turns hosting, each adding unique cultural and historical touches. Over time, formal structures were introduced, including scheduled programming, themes, banquet dinners, talent showcases, and organized tours. The reunions became a powerful testament to the legacy of love, unity, and faith shared across generations.

Legacy and Evolution
The reunion planning evolved significantly from humble beginnings to large-scale events with upwards of 400 attendees. Earlier reunions were coordinated with homemade meals and contributions from host families. As attendance grew, professional venues and catering services became standard.
Notable milestones in the reunion's evolution include:
Introduction of Themes: Beginning in 1993, themed reunions provided meaningful focus and inspiration, such as “Children Are Our Future” and “New Vines from Strong Roots.”
Technological Advances: By 2009, online registration and a dedicated website marked a turning point in accessibility and modern engagement.
Cultural Immersion: Reunions included tours of significant landmarks like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s memorial, local historical sites, and even beachside events in Florida and Virginia.
Faith and Reflection: Sunday worship services remained a cornerstone, grounding the reunions in gratitude and spiritual connection.
The reunions celebrate not only heritage but also the strength and diversity of interwoven lineages—from Romulus Barefield and Charlotte Porter to their descendants among the Hendersons, Woolfolks, Clays, and beyond. Their commitment to keeping the family connected has built a legacy that continues to inspire and endure.
